Why does my RRHAN-EC Masterclass Certificate show an expiry of 2024!!!

The RRHAN-EC cycle appears to work differently to the standard training cycle. The expiry shown on your certificate is for the current training cycle (i.e. 2021-2024).              Even many workplaces and schools are not aware of this, and simply look at the date the training was completed.

My suggestion is: Complete the free RRHAN-EC Fundamentals online update when it becomes available in early 2024 - then you will have valid certification until the next training cycle (2024-2027).

Alternatively, you may choose to: Keep track of the date your training was completed, and again only complete the online RRHAN-EC Fundamentals course BEFORE the next training cycle.

By taking either of these actions, you should not need to complete the RRHAN-EC Masterclass again (or at least until there are very significant changes - or you lose your certificate…)

 Child Protection Training FAQs

  • This can depend on your workplace and also on the role you/your staff have in working with children.

If the role is within an Education, Preschool or Child Care environment you are more likely to need the RRHAN-EC training (2hr online Fundamentals session AND 4hr Masterclass).

However, if the role crosses a variety of environments - disability care, home care, religious organisation, sporting organisation, etc. where you are working with children and young people under 18 yrs, then you will need the Department for Child Protection, Child Safe Environments - Through their Eyes 7hr training.

For some workplaces, you/your staff may be required to complete both full trainings - however generally the Through their Eyes plus the RRHAN-EC Fundamentals should be adequate to meet the requirements of the situation.

Please talk to me about meeting your child protection training needs.

  • Although both courses train people in Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect (RRHAN), the difference comes in the processes followed in various environments.

For RRHAN-EC, the focus is completely on education and care environments (EC), which includes primary and secondary schools, trade schools, senior colleges, preschools, kindergartens, and early learning centres. These environments are usually operated by either - Dept. for Education, Catholic Education in South Australia (CESA), or educational organisations which belong to the Association of Independent Schools in South Australia (AISSA). The reporting process and scenario examples are all for these environments.

For the Through their Eyes training, a more broad work environment focus is taken, considering all avenues of child-related employment, and following the recognised DCP notification process. Scenario examples cover a broad range of workplace settings, and the trainer may often share other relevant examples throughout the training.

  • Yes, in July 2021 an updated and revised version of the RAN-EC training was released - this is the RRHAN-EC training.

    These changes include:

    • The RRHAN-EC Fundamentals course replacing a number of previous courses (including the Refresher update, volunteer training and student placement training). Check out the RRHAN-EC mandatory notification training page for more information.

    • There are now two distinct stages to the RRHAN-EC training: Stage 1 is the 2hr Fundamentals course, which is completed online through the Dept. for Ed. Plink website; Stage 2 is the 4hr Masterclass, which can be completed either online or face-to-face. Regardless of how the Masterclass is completed, the training provided and the certificate received are the same.

    • The RRHAN-EC Masterclass is delivered by a number of different, approved training providers. These training providers are responsible for setting the dates and times of their Masterclass sessions, and whether the session is delivered face-to-face or online.

    • After the RRHAN-EC Fundamentals course is completed, you should be able to access the Masterclass catalogue. Bookings for the RRHAN-EC Masterclass are made by the participant directly through the Masterclass catalogue on the Plink website. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email from the Plink system providing payment information and session details - please look out for this email, and they can tend to land in your junk email.

  • Although the preferred way to complete any Child Protection training is through a face-to-face class situation, the challenge of distance and COVID-19 has caused a significant percentage of training delivery to be facilitated online.

    • I am able to provide training through either format, and am fortunate to have access to a large facility at Golden Grove for regular RRHAN-EC Masterclass sessions.

    • I am able to provide face-to-face training for workgroups at your location, for either the RRHAN-EC Masterclass or the Child Safe Environments - Through their Eyes training.

    • I am highly competent in online delivery and can provide online training for the RRHAN-EC Masterclass, and both the 7hr Child Safe Environments - Through their Eyes training and the 3hr Through their Eyes refresher update.

  • If you are participating in child protection training online, I would recommend that you use a computer, laptop or i-Pad for viewing the training. Although the training can be undertaken on your smartphone, this can cause difficulty in times when you need to participate in group activities - or simply when your phone rings and you need to take a call. Also, I do not recommend using your phone to view the participant workbook during the training, as for some pages there can be a lot of content, which becomes difficult to read on a smaller screen.

It is preferable to have a camera (laptops and i-Pads, and many computers have these already), as well as a good quality headset with a microphone - so you can participate effectively in the training. Even though, during the main content delivery, I have all participants muted, you can have the option of having your camera on or off, and there will be opportunity for group activities and invitation for your response to scenario questions.

You will also need access to the training participant workbook throughout the training. This will be provided to you in pdf form prior to the online training session. You can choose to print out the workbook or to view it online during the presentation.

I appreciate sitting in any classroom (face-to-face or online) can be tiring, and so - even with online classes, appropriate breaks will be scheduled across the my training sessions:

    • The 4hr RRHAN-EC Masterclass - one 15 min break

    • The 7hr Through their Eyes training - one 15 min morning break, one 30 min lunch break, and one 5 min afternoon break

    • The 3hrThrough their Eyes refresher training - one 10 min break

  • I appreciate that many people would rather physically attend a training session, instead of completing training online.

For the RRHAN-EC Masterclass, I deliver this face-to-face at the Golden Grove Lutheran Church, Wynn Vale, 1-2 times each month. These dates are available through the Masterclass catalogue.

If you have a group of people who require the RRHAN-EC Masterclass training at your worksite I am also able to come and deliver the training at your site - please contact me about a group booking option.

For the Child Safe Environments - Through their Eyes, 7hr training, I have a number of avenues for delivery:

    • I deliver this training once each month for Enhance Training. Bookings and payment are made directly through the Enhance Training site.

    • I am available for individual group bookings for worksites, and am able to deliver this training at your site - please contact me about a group booking option.

  • If you have registered for the RRHAN-EC Masterclass, you will receive a confirmation email after you register. This email will have details regarding the payment options available. (Note - if you cannot see this email - please check your junk email folder)

Payment needs to be made at least 48hrs prior to the training date. If payment is not received by this time (having been sent both email and text message reminders) your registration will be cancelled and you will need to re-register into the next appropriate training.

Payment can be made via EFT or PayPal. Where a workplace or third party will be paying for your training, please advise me and an invoice for payment can be set up.

An invoice/receipt of payment can be provided for tax purposes - on request. These are not issued unless requested.

If you are unable to attend the RRHAN-EC Masterclass and need your registration to be moved to another available training, please discuss this with me, and there will be no charge incurred.

If you are unable to attend the RRHAN-EC Masterclass and have no contact with me for 24 hrs after the training, your payment will be forfeited. You will be recorded as having your registration cancelled, and will need to re-register into the next appropriate training.

  • Basic information about the training sessions is available through the internet:

Information relevant for the individual training session will be provided once your booking or registration has been completed, and is usually sent to you via email.

For the RRHAN-EC Masterclass, online session, I will send an email on the evening before the training - providing the training materials and Zoom link (relieving the mad scramble just before the training starts.

  • I appreciate your concern, especially given the nature of the topics being discussed.

Please be aware that nothing of a graphic nature will be shown on the presentation, which could cause distress.

During the training, you are encouraged to keep your headset on, so no conversation which may cause distress will be heard by others in your environment.

Also - you may need to attend to your children (or pets, deliveries, partner, etc) during the training. If so, please ensure that your camera is off and your microphone is muted. Other than not being able to respond to a posed question at that time, you will still be able to fully participate in the training session.

  • Following your training, your certificate will be provided as a pdf document, via the email used for your registration. Your certificate should be received or be accessible within 24 hrs of completing the training.

The certificates issued are certified by the parent organisation - either Dept. for Education or Dept. for Human Services.

Whether you complete your training face-to-face or online, the certificate for the training completed is the same, and will be accepted by the body who requested your training (your employer).

For the Through their Eyes training, the certificate will be directly emailed to your email address, as provided to the trainer.

If the training is completed as part of a worksite booking, a master set of all staff certificates will be provided to your workplace training coordinator, for their staff records.

For the RRHAN-EC Masterclass certificates, you will receive an email notification from the Plink system advising that your certificate is ready to be accessed. This certificate will remain accessible through the Plink system.

  • As for a number of other trainings, your Child Protection training has a 3-year span.

If you follow up on refreshing your training before the 3-year time expires, you will only need to complete an update session. For the RRHAN-EC training, this is through the 2-hr Fundamentals course, and is completed online. For the Through their Eyes training, this is through a 3-hr refresher session (completed either face-to-face or online, depending on the training provider).

For either training, if you fail to refresh the training before it expires, you will need to complete the full training again, to be recognised as trained by your workplace.

  • No - At this stage I do not maintain Wait Lists for the RRHAN-EC Masterclass sessions.

I suggest that you register into the closest available training - to ensure you have a place. Then keep an eye on the training sessions, in case a space becomes available at an earlier session.

Note: For my training, if the registration has not been paid prior to the training, the registration will be cancelled. This cancellation will generally be at 5pm on a Wednesday (for Friday or Saturday training) or Friday ( for Monday training).

  • Assessment options are available for the 7hr, Child Safe Environments - Through their Eyes training.

I generally do not administer the assessment, however if requested, this can be added to the end of the training, for no additional fee.

Please note - the assessment is NOT nationally recognised, and as such cannot be used as part of a qualification.

 Child Safe Organisation FAQs

  • A Child Safe Organisation puts the best interests of children and young people first. These organisations believe children and young people have the right to be respected, empowered and safe. Staff listen and respond to children’s views and opinions, and are committed to their responsibility for keeping children and young people safe from all forms of harm.

A Child Safe Organisation provides or enables appropriate training for all volunteer and paid staff to understand their Mandatory Notification responsibilities, and engages ALL staff in appropriate induction processes.

    A Child Safe Organisation:

    • Creates an environment where children’s safety and wellbeing is at the centre of thought, values and actions.

    • Places emphasis on genuine engagement with and valuing of children and young people.

    • Creates conditions that reduce the likelihood of harm to children and young people.

    • Creates conditions that increase the likelihood of identifying any harm.

    • Responds to any concerns, disclosures, allegations or suspicions of harm.

    Ref: https://childsafe.humanrights.gov.au/about/what-child-safe-organisation

  • In South Australia, all organisations who engage in child-related work must submit their Child Safe Organisation Policy and their Child Safety Compliance Statement to the Dept. of Human Services (DHS) for approval. It is no longer enough to simply say “Yes, we do that” - organisations must provide evidence through these documents, and the regular review of these documents.

This requirement has come as a result of investigations, reviews and changes in legislation, including:

  • Your Child Safe Organisation Compliance statement must clearly state the commitment of your organisation to the safety, protection and wellbeing of children and young people.

Your Child Safe Organisation policy must clearly demonstrate how each of the 10 National Principles for Child Safe Organisations are achieved across your organisation. Your policy must also provide reference to current South Australian Legislation.

Your policy must express how it is made accessible to all people accessing your organisation (this includes, but is not limited to, children and young people, parents and carers, paid and voluntary employees, and affiliated organisations)

Your policy must demonstrate a regular review and update process and timeline.

Your documents must be lodged according to the DHS Lodgement process

  • Yes.

Although we have worked together to prepare your documents, ready for you to lodge them to DHS, there may still be some small gaps where DHS may require further information.

Please forward the DHS feedback to me to review and respond to across your documentation. I will then return these changes to you within 2-weeks, so you can re-lodge your documents for approval.

We will work together until your documents have achieved DHS approval.

  • This is not an uncommon situation - where an organisation believes that their current documentation meets the DHS requirements, and lodges for approval without critical review against the National Principles.

I can work with you - either through consultancy support, or through starting again with the workshop AND consultancy support, to review your documentation and help your organisation work towards achieving DHS approval.

  • As you can appreciate, reviewing the documentation for your organisation requires time to read and review, and then also making changes where necessary, to demonstrate how each National Principle is achieved.

To undertake this, I need to explore your organisation. This includes: gathering a thorough understanding of who you are; reading your policies and procedures; and learning about how you engage with the children and young people who access your organisation.

On average, this can take around 6 hours (including time for review and changes following DHS feedback), however every organisation is different.

Your organisation will be invoiced after the consultancy support has been provided. You will find that my rate ($60 per hour) is very reasonable.

  • There are a number of documents and templates which can be accessed to support the development of your Child Safe Organisation policy and Compliance Statement.

    These include:

  • The Australian Human Rights Commission, through the Child Safe Organisations project, has developed an 11 module online training, which is designed to help organisations increase their knowledge and understanding of the National Principles and identify steps they need to take as they work towards implementing the National Principles.

Each module can take approx. 30mins, and access is free of charge, for individuals to complete.

Having completed these modules, my 6hr workshop provides both an overview of the modules and an understanding of each of the 10 National Principles - together with support to work through the Organisational Self-assessment tool.

You can read mode about the e-Learning modules here, however actual content is not provided without registration through the Human Rights Commission site.

  • Yes.

If your organisation or club is part of a larger association, the workshop can be delivered in one, central location, enabling you all to participate in the workshop together, and then each group will organise individual consultancy time.

Similarly, for organisations in country areas, why not arrange for the workshop to be delivered in your town/community, and make a day of it (Note: travel costs may be incurred - see ‘Meeting you where you are’ on the Home page).

Each organisation or club will be invoiced the $600 fee. Additional consultancy hours will be invoiced as accrued.

  • The key persons who should attend the training and be involved in the review and preparation of your documents include:

    • Key management and leadership roles - e.g. club president, chairperson, compliance officer, senior coaching staff, group leaders

    • Children and young people who hold leadership roles

    • Parents and/or carers who hold leadership or representative roles

    • Persons from other affiliated organisations or associations who have a significant influence on your organisations’ operation.
